My great-grandmother passed away over 10 years ago. I adored my Great Grandma Sue. I still do, and I feel an ache in my heart because I miss her.
My great-grandma… she rarely shared about her childhood. I tried to help her fill out a “grandma” book once, but she was so uncomfortable sharing her past. When she died, she left some clues behind. Clues that lead my imagination to wander about the life she led.
She divorced back in the 30’s (I think), when divorce was most certainly not a “norm”. She was a very independent and stubborn woman who worked hard and raised a son all by herself at a time when I am sure it was a great struggle. She was a strong, strong woman.
I was digging through my little “treasure chest” of clues recently, and I came across the best letter. I scanned the pages, and if you click on the image it will take you to my flickr page where you can view the words more clearly…. cuz I am certainly not going to type it out! The postmark date was 1945. Grandma must have been in her 30’s when a very handsome suitor caught her her fancy…
Oh my heart.
He drew pictures…
The following picture is one of Grandma Sue, probably 15 or more years before this letter. However, I must share it. She is the one in the white dress. So beautiful.
Wasn’t sure if I should post a picture of the gentleman who fancied my adorable granny, but I can’t resist… I found it in the envelope with the letter…
I regret I do not really recall what happened between my grandma and this gentleman suitor. If my memory serves me correctly he died rather unexpectedly. I wish I remembered the details. I wish she had shared more stories with me…
