Halloween Costumes: the Cookie Jar and the Family Pet

A costume for the cookie jar AND the puppy?

Yes.

Halloween Costumes…

from the cookie jar to the family pet.

*Thank you to Value Village and Savers for sponsoring and bringing this informative (it’s informative!) and creative post about costuming to us today!*

The fun thing about thrifting is…. the possibilities are endless (see my Value Village haul here). The fun thing about thrifting at Value Village — is not only does one get to explore the former treasures of others (my thrifted frames ideas here), but there is also a great selection of new items as well – ESPECIALLY Halloween costumes.

Shop new, shop used… create the perfect costume! I decided the perfect costume for our puppy Gus would be a NEW costume.

Yes, Value Village even had pet costumes and as much as I’ve been a critic of people who dress their pets — I am having to swallow my pride on account of the fact that…

I mean…

Because.

Am I the only one dying over here?

Bless Puppy Gus. His only resistance was staying still enough for a non-blurry picture. And once he realized the costume was going to be on awhile, he gave in and just laid down.

Good doggie.

Now. How about a costume for a cookie jar?

This is where thrifting is the funnest… walking through the aisles thinking about what ‘this’ could be, or ‘that’ could be. Before I went on my big Value Village trip I contributed to to the Saver’s board by pinning my idea inspirations for the trip (by the way – don’t forget about the $150 Value Village Monster Mash Pin to Win gift certificate giveaway – details here!)… Even with all the ideas I found aaaand pinned, I could never really guess what I might find.

For example, who knew I’d find a glass cookie jar that would become the PERFECT pumpkin cookie jar???

I started with just a plain, old cookie jar (that I found, of course, at Value Village)…

Please disregard the foam brushes and black paint in the photo above. I did not end-up using either. I originally thought I’d paint a jack-o-lantern face, but decided the grooves on the glass jar would not be friendly to try to paint straight lines on, I decided to use GLITTER SPRAY INSTEAD! I think I made the very best decision.

But before the glitter spray, I took a few moments to rough-up my glass jar/cookie jar with some fine sand paper. My paint can said I didn’t need to do that, but I’m silly and it feels like I’m giving the pain something to hold on to. You just do as you wish.

Then I sprayed the body of my jar orange. I prayed it with 3 coats… waiting for each coat to completely dry before I added another.

And I painted the lid green. The lid only needed two coats of green.

And when all the paint was dry, I made my pumpkin cookie jar SPARKLE.

Literally.

Isn’t this jar fun?!

SO next time you find yourself at Value Village, just thrifting away… keep your eyes and mind open. Be thinking not about what IS, but what COULD BE. What could paint do… or velcro… or yarn… or disassembly??? What might you have done with this jar?

And of course, glitter. In my post from last week, I had a few folks call me out on the lack of glitter. I learned my lesson, and I am bringing the glitter back to my people. But I didn’t put it on Gus. He was tortured enough.

Plus, craft glitter spray is MUCH different than glitter body spray.

I know.

From experience.

Believe me, you do not want to use craft glitter spray on your body.

Trust me.
