Make It the Best Summer Ever: Suncreen Up, Y’all!

by | Jun 19, 2015 | Family & Friends, Sponsored

SUMMER IS HERE!

You want to know what one of the first things I do when the sun starts making it’s heated debut?

I LOAD UP ON SUNSCREEN.

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Banana Boat®. All opinion and facts about how I keep my family protected are mine that have taken years to develop and obsess about.

To help make the best summer ever, a tip I have is… a loaded sun protection basket! Banana Boat® FTW!

I know, squirt guns and pools and BBQs are the usual “BEST SUMMER EVER” ingredients, but hear me out…

I approach the philosophy of sunscreen like I approach my philosophy of lip gloss – BE PREPARED.

I keep lip glosses everywhere… in drawers, in the car, in my purse. My suncreen approach is very similar.

I keep a suncreen basket stocked in the house. It’s the place we can all go for our sun protection needs.

“MOM! WHERE’S THE SUNCREEN?”

(Eventhough they KNOW… I mean THEY KNOW, they still seem to ask…) (See also: KIDS)

“IN THE BASKET!”

“Oh yeah…”

(I keep the basket in the same place. It rarely gets moved. So then it’s just a matter of making sure the suncreen gets returned. That’s why I keep at least a couple bottles in the basket.)

Having a designated suncreen location in the home saves me a WHOLE lot of time and frustration. The kids too. They just want to get down to the business of having fun, and they know there is no fun to get to if the sunscreen isn’t applied before we go.

But I don’t just keep it in the house… I keep a bottle(s) in the car too.

I keep suncreen for the face in my purse – all the time.

And…. depending on our activities for the day – I’ll pack more in the to-go bag.

Including but not limited to suncreen for the lips. I love that Banana Boat® has a 45 for the lips!

If my kids’ lips never get burned again… I have done my job.

About a year or two ago, I realized/learned (it finally registered!) suncreen should be reapplied every 2 hours or so. About an ounce. So, while having a designated suncreen spot at home is great, having my supplies already in the car and in my bag is so helpful. Especially if I forget to grab extra when running out the door.

And suncreen should be applied a half hour before heading out. So a habit we have gotten into is as part of our “getting out the door” process is me yelling at the kids to get a bottle of suncreen from the basket and suncreen up (honesty, folks… the struggle is real). Mine are old enough to do most of it themselves (GLORY!).

They help each other get the tough spots. I might be lucky, but none of them love sunburns so they are really good about covering themselves and making sure the youngest didn’t miss any spots either. I always double-check, but they really do a great job. When we get in the car I pass back the face suncreen and lip stuff and we make sure ears and noses and lips get the extra attention those spots tend to need.

Can I just say one more thing? I know lots of people are planning on big trips and doing big things, but the sun is out all the time. We have one trip to a lake planned this summer. Obviously, I will be bringing the basket with me. But the rest of the sunshine time will be basic summer ins and outs… sports camps, theatre camp, occasional trips to the local beach, trips to the park, and lots of backyard time and bicycle time. The sun will be in all those places. So I just aim to be prepared by keeping sun protection on hand at home and in the car so we will be ready whether we decide to stay or go.
