Summertime.
Snacks.
During the summer there is a lot of feeding that goes on… feeding the tummies AND the imaginations.
In fact, during the school year too. Which – HOW IS SUMMER ALMOST OVER?!
I digress…
Feed the imagination.
The best part of summer is also the most challenging – free time. As much as we run around and try to keep busy, there is still a lot of time to fill.
Feeding the imagination while feeding the belly is a great way to help pass the time without wasting time.
It’s easy to fill hours with cartoons and video games. And there’s a time and place for that, but it’s not for ALL the time.
A fun little way to change up snack time is serving it up in fun cupcake papers.
I double up on the papers, for holding strength.
It’s a project the kids can easily take on. And they love individually “packed” things.
While more complex projects can be fun, I am not a huge fan of the mess that bigger imagination feeding projects can bring, so the little washi tape flag on a toothpick project is a fun and low-mess-impact project.
You simply cut a strip of washi tape, fold it over the end of a toothpick, tape the sides together, clip a V out of the edges… and on a scale of 1-10 – this imagination-fed snack time goes to 11!
Ways snack time can feed the imagination:
- • Kids can decide HOW to serve the items (in cupcake papers, bowls, cups, cupcake tins, platter, mason jars…)
- • Mom or dad can give parameters of snacking (sweet, savory, healthy, etc…) and the kids can learn about food as they explore their options.
- • Decoration and presentation.
These particular snack choices (carrot coins, raisins, Horizon Sandwich Crackers, almonds, Horizon Fruit Snacks…) are great on the go as well. I have small BPA free containers I use often to take food on the go (like, the beach or any number of rehearsals or practices that are going on all the time). Of course the Horizon Fruit Snacks come in their own pouch, but we emptied a couple pouches into the cupcake papers for that creative presentation piece.
I like to offer an assortment of options (veggies, fruit, crackers, sweet-tooth satisfiers) because.
Yes, BECAUSE.
I’m the mom and I get to pull the BECAUSE card. All day, every day y’all.
I definitely keep my eye out for and offer items that help my family make healthy choices. But also… being the practical mom I am, I also keep my eye out for the things I know my kids think are yummy and delicious. How do you feed the imagination and/or bellies of your kid people?
