Campbell’s Address Your Heart: Making Better Food Choices

by | Feb 7, 2013 | Sponsored

My dad had a heart attack on New Year’s Eve. Like, less than 2 months ago.

So as not to keep you in suspense, my dad is fine. My mom was a boss and got him to the hospital right away. The doctor said, ‘Time is muscle.” And my mom wasted no time making the decision to get my dad to the hospital. That was a key in his successful recovery.

But what do we do BEFORE a cardiac event? Wouldn’t it be ideal to not have to find oneself in my dad’s or mom’s shoes? What can we do to PREVENT our own or a loved one’s cardiac event? Even more, once something like that has happened it is SO important to support those who are in recovery… helping them make changes… which often means changes for us as well.

I am a woman who has battled the scale since 2nd grade. But I have made great strides in the last 11 years. As I have worked hard to not go back to the lifestlye I once had, I have discovered 2 key princicples that have worked for me:

  1. Consistent exercise.
  2. Smart food choices.

Easier said than done, I know!

From lower-sodium choices, to low-cal and low-fat options… to incorporating more fruit and vegetables… to mindful effort to get my body moving… I am daily making choices so my heart will last the very longest it can. So instead of hot-cheesy pizza… I can choose soup:

… and some whole grain bread. With my handy little panini grill, no one misses the butter that normally goes on a grilled cheese sammy…

Lots of women have already made a commitment to eat right, so we’re asking people to share how they care for their heart with others as part of the Campbell’s Address Your Heart Kitchen Project for a chance to win a $50,000 kitchen makeover. To enter, use my contest widget to share a photo, along with a corresponding story or tip that shows how you care for your heart in the kitchen.

Here’s an entry example: I care for my heart in the kitchen by making lots of little adjustments… Take, for example, grilled cheese. I leave off the butter. I dip my whole grain sandwich in something non-fatty… like tomato soup and skip scrunching up lots of crackers into the bowl. I keep it to half a sandwich instead of a whole, and of course, some fruit. A crispy apple adds a cool, especially delicious twist to yummy, hot soup and toasty, warm sandwich…
