A Lesson in Teen Personal Finance

I have three teenagers. Our girls are 13 and 16 and our son just graduated high school.

Don’t panic. We’re fine! It’s awesome… aaaaand exhausting some days.

The topic of finances is frequent in our home… teen personal finance to be specific.

The 16-year-old does have a job, so she has a lot more financial flexibility than the 13 year old. But they want lots of really great things and well… we feed them, and house them, and provide for needs and some wants but they have more than just SOME wants!

My husband and I always have our wheels turning about how to teach all our kids about money. As they get older it is a topic that we rarely get a break from.

What do we provide for as their parents? What “non-essential” things should be their financial responsibility? How do they earn to be able to buy those “non-essentials”? And how do they manage it?

Starbucks Rewards™ Visa® Prepaid Card

For a long time I dished out their allowance in cash. Then the older two moved to bank accounts and I began transferring allowance, money for gas, select meals on the go, and grocery purchases made to keep me from having to run another errand.

But I recently learned about the Starbucks Rewards™ Visa® Prepaid Card and I am rethinking it all… especially as the 13-year-old has expressed a desire to also have access to a debit card. The Starbucks Rewards™ Visa® Prepaid Card is not a credit card (I do not want my 13 and 16-year-olds to have my/a credit card).

Starbucks Rewards™ Visa® Prepaid Card

Unlike many other prepaid cards out there, there are no monthly, annual, or reload fees. Also unlike many other prepaid cards out there the Starbucks Rewards™ Visa® Prepaid Card offers great perks!

Are you familiar with the Starbucks Rewards program? Earning 125 Stars earns a free drink or food item at Starbucks stores!*

Starbucks Rewards™ Visa® Prepaid Card - mom redeeming Star rewards

I set-up my Starbucks Rewards™ Visa® Prepaid Card in a snap. I am a huge fan of things I can accomplish in a snap!

How can this card benefit parents and teens?

That’s a great question! There’s no risk connected with using mama’s credit card, or access to mama’s bank account via her debit card, and remember that whole perks thing?

In short, with a Starbucks Rewards™ Visa® Prepaid Card you can:

  •  load whatever amount onto the card (for example: your kids’ budget for the week/month)
  •  your kid makes their own spending decisions with boundaries
  •  YOU earn Stars toward those Rewards.

I bet you have some questions about how this works. Here’s a bit more information. I know how you like details!

  • Earn 125 Stars the first time you use your card to load at least $10 to your registered Starbucks Card in the App. That’s enough Stars for a qualifying drink or food item for doing something you needed to do anyway!*
  • You get instant Starbucks Rewards Gold status as a Starbucks Rewards™ Visa® Prepaid cardholder. Gold Status cardholders get all kinds of perks, so if you’ve always wanted to see what the fuss is about – this is the time!
  • You earn 1 Star for every $10 you make purchases using the prepaid card.
  •  Earn 2 Stars per $1 you spend at Starbucks stores as a Starbucks Rewards™ member when you use your registered Starbucks Card or registered Starbucks Card through the App.*

Plus, when you give your teen a Starbucks Rewards™ Visa® Prepaid Card you give yourself a break from having to fork over cash at intermittent, and usually ill-timed intervals. It can be a great tool for teaching your teen how to work with a set budget. You also earn yourself a little treat.

But seriously. The Starbucks Rewards™ Visa® Prepaid Card can be a great tool in helping teach your teens about financial responsibility, and with the benefit of earning Starbucks Rewards you get something out of it too.

I love redeeming those Rewards, don’t you?!

The Starbucks Rewards™ Visa® Prepaid Card is easy to set-up. You can learn more all about it here. Within a week I got my card in the mail and those teen personal finance lessons began right away. And of course I redeemed the Stars I received for signing up for a Reward right away… You know, for being such a savvy mom and all.

* At participating Starbucks stores. Some restrictions apply. See Starbucks.com/terms for details.
