21 Parenting Do’s and Don’ts

I have been a parent for over 17 years. If we were counting cumulative years (3 kids at 11, 14, and 17 years)… I could almost say I have 42 years of parenting experience. Which, if you consider how VERY different each child is… I FEEL like I have been parenting 42 years.

Before I get to my list: 21 Parenting Do’s and Don’ts… here are a few general tips:

HOLD ON TIGHT.

YOU HAVE NO IDEA. YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE NO IDEA.

NO TWO DAYS ARE THE SAME.

BRACE YOURSELF.

CHERISH THE SWEET STUFF BECAUSE IT’S OVER BEFORE IT EVEN BEGINS.

And my BEST piece of advice:

DISREGARD MOST OF THE ADVICE SHOVED AT YOU.

In my experience as a parent, I have been given LOADS of advice – either directly (strangers are so helpful as are other parents who have no idea what it’s like to live with YOUR kid)… or indirectly (I’m looking at you random blog posts and internet commenters). I have definitely come across helpful parenting advice… but those nuggets are helpful when weighed against the knowledge I have about my children, and my kids’ individual personalities.

What works for one most likely will not work for another.

In my never to be humble opinion, parenting is like gambling… You might know a little bit, but really you just cross your fingers and hope you roll the right numbers.

I have found I have to approach how I parent my children similar how I approach making my childrens’ sandwiches:

  • • Turkey, mustard, lettuce, tomato.
  • • Turkey or ham (she insisted every other week she has never liked one… or the other) with mayo and mustard.
  • • Ham with mustard and cheese.

There are days I forget the mayo, there are days we have no cheese. Somedays we are out of bread and only have peanut butter.

Praise and glory we don’t have peanut allergies.

However… if you find yourself suddenly unable to parent on your own… you are more than welcome to print out this list of 21 Parenting Do’s and Don’ts.

Put it in your pocket and apply when, where, and TO WHOM as needed.

  • • Let them play in the dirt
    • Don’t let them play in the dirt.
    • Use hand sanitizer.
    • Don’t use hand sanitizer.
    • Sunscreen causes cancer.
    • Don’t use sunscreen, or… cancer.
    • Don’t helicopter parent.
    • Be a helicopter parent.
    • Your child must hold your hand/be in physical contact with you at the store/zoo/sidewalk at all times. DO NOT BLINK as your child may never leave your sight. Ever. Or they will most assuredly end up in a gorilla cage.
    • Don’t helicopter parent.
    • Don’t yell.
    • It’s OK to yell. We’re only human.
    • Make your kids walk to school.
    • Drive your kids to school. Kidnappers, yo.
    • Give your kids allowance.
    • Don’t give them allowance.
    • Make your kids do chores.
    • Don’t give them chores.
    • Co-sleep.
    • Cry it out.
  • • Etc., etc., etc…

And while I am shelling out advice, please remember:

  • • Hot coffee is hot.
    • Knives are sharp.
    • Fire is fire-y.
    • Sugar is more addictive than crack cocaine.
    • Puppies are cute, but a lot of work. Anybody want my list on puppy parenting tips?

Finally… Chances are you are doing a good job, Mom. And Dad. It’s the parents that DON’T torture themselves about whether they are screwing their kids up or not that probably need a list of do’s and don’ts.

Don’t be too hard on yourself.

Don’t over-think it.

Or do.

It’s your kid… and probably your wallet that will have to pay the therapy bills anyway…
