The 22 Day Road Trip: The SO Excited BEFORE & Reeeeally Tired AFTER

by | Jul 25, 2012 | Joel, Lucy, Olivia, Parenting/Family, The Hubs | 3 comments

This was our first family picture… about 5 miles into our 4,500 mile journey to the center of the earth:

we are family

We are all pretty excited in this picture, here. Lucy especially. You can’t tell the other two are excited because I drive them nuts with my picture taking.

I tell them in 20 years they will thank me for making them miserable.

THEY WILL.

But for today, let’s focus on Lucy – on the right.

Miss Neener Neener Neener.

I would say she is the emotional barometer of the family.

Actually, I’m not sure if her outlook shapes our outlook or if she is the first to crack… but… well… just look at our LAST road trip family picture… I’d say we were a few hundred miles short of home:

we are family

Lucy is DONE.

I can’t look at this picture without CRACKING up.

KILLS ME.

That little bug was a trooper. From Seattle to Northern California to Hollywood to Disneyland to Colorado and a water park to 4 days in Utah at one of mommy’s conferences… we ran our kids into THE GROUND.

When people bring up our 3 week road trip, eyes often glaze over… many give me that “You are a hero for doing such a thing” look… And before our trip, I would have given me a hero look too.

But you guys… it was actually AWESOME.

AWESOME.

I prepared for a lot of not awesome… and not everything was perfect… but given the circumstances – THREE WEEKS ON THE ROAD WITH MY FAMILY, 9 STATES, 6 DIFFERENT HOMES, 1 RESORT HOTEL AND 1 MOTEL (ohthatwashorriblehorriblehorrible)… AAAAAAAAAND almost running out of gas in the middle of nowhere in Utah… It was awesome.

Our family seems to mesh well with the culture of road tripping. GO FIGURE.

Nomads at heart?

Seriously. We want to do it again. Not a dissenter in the bunch.

Aaaaaanywho. It’s hard to tell from the second picture, but Lucy’s face is half-painted from a wild party the night before. She’s exhausted… she’s uncomfortable and even she is a bit tired of mom and her camera.

SHE WILL THANK ME IN 20 YEARS.

She’s gonna love that picture.

We are back home and in full summer swing. Now if only the weather would cooperate here in the Pacific NorthWET… or shall we say, Pacific NorthCLOUDY.
