Hey there Mom and Dad, do you worry that the care for Invisalign© clear aligners might be too tough for your teen? I would say – DON’T.
Taking proper care of Invisalign clear aligners is not much more work than the effort behind good, basic oral hygiene. And if you’ve ever had traditional braces, you know how much effort THOSE require.
Here are 5 ways to care for Invisalign clear aligners:
- Keep them clean.
- Use your fingertips.
- Wear them often.
- Remove them while eating or drinking.
- Store them properly.
Keep them clean.
Before wearing, simply brush aligners with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste. Another cleansing option is to have your teen occasionally pop their Invisalign clear aligners into a cup of Invisalign cleaning crystals! You can find them here!
Use your fingertips.
Press gently and snap into place… don’t bite them into place.
Wear them often.
Aligners should be worn 20-22 hours a day!
Remove them while eating or drinking.
The removing while eating seems to be a pretty easy “rule”, but sometimes kiddos tend to test out the “remove them while drinking” rule. Some drinks can discolor the clear aligners, and the sugar from drinks… well we all know that’s not a good thing! Eat and drink without the aligners, do a quick brush, and put them back on. Voila!
Store them properly.
When not in use, store aligners in their case for safe keeping. Take it from a mom with experience… don’t place them on a napkin. Trust me.
And lastly… be clear with your teen. Both traditional braces and Invisalign clear aligners require some effort. Talk with your teen about these tips, and check-in on them. I got a couple of extra aligner cases so my daughter could keep one in her back pack, one at home… and a back-up.
