A note about getting stuff did and earning things.

I’ve been on a mission lately…

Like 007, but with less international mystery.

And they will NEVER want to make a movie out of it.

Whoever THEY are…

I’ve been TRYING to get a bit of a schedule in place because when my feet hit the floor in the morning, I often only know that I need to get up and DO STUFF.

Taking on the day with a generalized idea that STUFF HAZ TO BE DID is not an efficient way of getting said stuff did.

You can quote me on that.

So, with the onset of homeschool (well into a month now), and my son’s track schedule, and the girlsssesss play practice schedule, contract work, a renewed commitment to cook things that taste more like food and less like CONVENIENCE, a paid registration propelling me to complete a half-marathon in June, A STINKING PUPPY, and a few other things anticipated and unanticipated… I find I often wake up feeling defeated almost before my feet even hit the floor.

(Please note, my ::list:: above is incomplete and is not shared with the heart of “look at all I have to do oh my gosh I am so busy…” It’s more of an act of therapy and plays a bit into the theory behind storytelling. If I was going to be completely vague, I’d have just made this a VagueFacebook status. Furthermore, I am utterly and humbly aware I am neither the most busy nor most burdened. Further, furthermore I am not walking in anyone’s shoes but my own. Occasionally barefoot. Sometimes it feels a bit like going barefoot on newly asphalted road. And it’s 102 degrees out but I digress…)

My effort in changing things up is a process that’s been evolving over the last couple of weeks. But I have recognized a need for shifting for much longer and have been processing it for many months. This ever-evolving process involves list-making, brain dumping, and quiet time for me as I figuratively throw everything in the air and sift the grain from the chaff.

On the same note, entire bowls of cereal still get spilled which throws timing completely off. Especially when there is a bus to catch. So I am still keeping the art of flexibility high in my mental notes.

I could totally write about how I am a rather inflexible person, and I have learned by watching my son I actually need a good 5-30 minutes to adjust to shifts in plans, people who are always exceptionally late, etc… but I’ll save that confession for the next time we sit on the couch. A

Imagine my surprise when I dangled a carrot before me this morning. Actually, speaking figuratively… I didn’t dangle an actual carrot before me… it was more like the equivalent of a cupcake. Or a 3-4 Oreos. Carrots don’t motivate me.

I heard my head tell me, “If you can really hunker down and get x,y,z done with Lucy for homeschooling by noon… you can go for a run!”

I was GUNG HO! I was all, “THAT’S RIGHT, SELF. WE ARE GOING TO GET STUFF DID AND THEN WE GET TO GO FOR A RUN!!!!!!”

::insert sound of screeching halt here::

Did you catch that?

My mind equated REWARD with RUNNING.

Not Oreos.

I AM A SICK WOMAN SOMEONE PLEASE BRING ME A PINT OF BEN AND JERRY’S AND TALK SOME SENSE INTO ME.

As I was running… since I earned it (fool)… I realized how I had so cleverly totally tricked me into thinking running was a reward.

Yet. As I sit here. I am thankful for a few things:

  • my husband worked from home which mean escape was possible
  • I got to listen to MY music and enjoy the fresh air…
  • And I got to be all by myself… which is crazy rare these days.

Just me. Fresh air. My headphones. And sweat.

When I went running a few days ago, I grabbed picture of this:

speed

As I was nearing this speed-reader-thingy  it it flashed a BIG OL’ 6.

Not sure how I feel about that.

The speed reader-thingy telling everyone how fast I was or was not running, or that I was heavy enough to get a reading.

::blink blink::

On that note… I think I need some coffee. With chocolate in it. Whatddya say?
